A Biography of Australia’s Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull

Overview

Malcolm Turnbull is Australia’s Prime Minister and also Liberal Party’s leader. He was born on 24th October 1954, and assumed the Prime Minister’s office on 15th September 2015.

Early Life

Mr. Turnbull was born 61 years ago to Coral Lansbury and Bruce Turnbull. Bruce was a prominent hotel broker while Coral was an academic, a radio actor and a writer. His parents separated when he was only nine years old.

Education

malcolmturnbullTurnbull started his academic life at Vaucluse Public School, but later transferred to St. Ives Preparatory School after only three years. Thereafter, he joined Randwick Campus, where he became the senior school captain. He excelled in English and History, and even won the famous Lawrence –Campbell Oratory Competition.

In 1973, Malcolm joined the University of Sydney where he pursued a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science. During this period, he worked as a journalist for Channel 9, Nation Review and Radio 2SM.

In 1978, he won a scholarship offered by the Rhodes Foundation, which enabled him to pursue a Bachelor of Civil Law Degree at Brasenose College (Oxford). During his studies, he worked as a freelance journalist for the Sunday Times.

Political career

Before becoming a politician, Mr. Turnbull worked as a prominent journalist, venture capitalist, lawyer and investment banker.

In 2007, Malcolm was appointed Minister for Water and Environment by Mr. Howard. One year later, he was elected as Liberal Party’s leader, which effectively catapulted him to the position of Leader of the Official Opposition.

Mr. Turnbull’s support for the famous Carbon Pollution -Reduction Scheme that was sponsored by the Labor Government made the Liberal Party split in the middle. This resulted in his loss of the party’s leadership to Mr. Tony Abbot during a vote held in December 2009.

The tragic loss almost convinced him to abandon politics. However, he decided to maintain his position as MP. In September 2013, Mr. Abbot appointed him the Minister for Communications.

In September 2015, Malcolm contested for the Liberal Party Leadership position against Mr. Abbot. He gave him (Mr. Abbot) a resounding defeat by winning 54 votes against Abbot’s 44 votes. The following day (15th September 2015), he officially assumed the position of Prime Minister.

Personal life

Mr. Turnbull married Lucy Turnbull on 22nd March 1980. The ceremony was held in Oxfordshire, near Oxford, and was presided over by a priest affiliated to the Church of England. Lucy was at one time a Lord Mayor in Sydney, and is currently a prominent entrepreneur. Together, they have two children; Daisy and Alex. They are also grandparents to Jack, who was born in September 2013.

Religion

Malcolm was a devout Presbyterian for many years. However, he converted to Catholicism when he met his wife. Despite being a devoted Catholic, he has consistently voiced his opinions against the Church’s teachings concerning abortion, same-sex marriage and stem-cell research, among other contentious issues.

Personal wealth

In the year 2005, Mr. Turnbull’s net worth was estimated at 133 million Australian Dollars, thus making him the richest parliamentarian in Australia that year. Five years later, he was ranked position 182 in the BRW Rich-200 list. In 2014, his net worth was estimated at 186 million Australian Dollars.

Honours

On 1st January 1991, he was decorated with the Centenary Medal because of providing distinguished and selfless services to the corporate world.
