Brussels Terror Attack
It was a heart-breaking and sad morning for Belgium citizens. On 22nd March 2016 morning there was a terrible incident where there were bombing cases at the Brussels main International Airport and at the Maalbeek metro station. There was a twin bomb explosion at the American airlines and the other near the Starbucks Coffee shop. There was another bomb blast that was recorded at the Maelbeek Metro Station.
Zaventem airport is located about 11km (7 miles) north-east of Brussels and it is able to deal with more than 23 million passengers per year. The Maelbeek Metro Station is also a crowded place where there are hundreds of people. This made it a suitable location for the terror attacks. The attacks have been compared to the London attacks of 2005 and it has been thought that the attackers were also responsible for the Paris attacks. So far, there have been no credible information on the terror groups that were involved in these morning attacks.
There were some reports from the eye witnesses in the airport that shots were heard in the air and Arabic words were shouted some just before the explosions occurred. The authorities closed all the air operation in the airport- where the departing flights were cancelled and all the arriving planes were diverted to nearby to nearby stations and some were subsequently closed. The two explosions were caused by a suicide bomber an the other explosion was caused by an explosive device.
At the Maalbeek metro station the explosion took place in a train that was on its way to Schuman from Maalbeek metro station. Initially there were no cases of death at the station but it was later confirmed that more than 18 people had died. After this attack the Maalbeek metro station was subsequently closed down and security was beefed up in the station as health workers and rescue missions were being conducted.
The Belgium government has raised the terrorists level to the highest level after these attacks and it has also urged its citizens to try and reach their friends and family members via social networks before trying to call them. The Belgian authorities have so far confirmed that more than 31 people had lost their lives and scores injured in this terrorist attack. These attacks came 4 days after Abdeslam- who was a main terror suspect in the Paris terrorist attack- was arrested in the nation.
The Belgian prime minister -Charles Michel -said that the attacks were violent, blind and cowardly. He also continued and described the day as tragedy day and a black day and that every citizen in the town should show solidarity and calmness. The president of the European Council also described the attacks as another low from the terrorists in their service of violence and hatred.
The world has reacted remorsefully after these attacks after the attacks and many people have sent their condolences to Belgium in social media. The Netherlands government has also deployed more security at the borders to ensure that the culprits do not flee. Israel has also banned all flights from Europe temporarily. Heads from Europeans countries have also sent their condolences to Belgium.
